History of Gurudwara Shri Garhi Sahib Ji
After Leaving Shri Anandpur Sahib, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji reached in Shri Chamkaur Sahib (At that time Known as Garhi Chamkaur) on 7th Poh Bikrami, 1761 (the year 1704). Guruji was accompanied by their two elder sons, Panj Pyare and 40 Sikhs.
First, they stayed in one garden where Gurudwara Damdama Sahib Ji is located. Mughal army was behind them, so they chose the highest place in Shri Chamkaur sahib. It was the Palace of two brothers. Guru Gobind Singh Ji send his Sikhs to meet with the brothers and asked to give Palace. The two brothers Rai Jagat Singh and Roop Chand agreed and gave their Palace to Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji transferred it into a small Castle. Guruji place 8 – 8 Sikhs on each side of the Palace. On the night of 7th Poh Mughal army siege the Palace. On 8th Poh battle of Chamkaur Sahib happened in which two elder sons of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, 3 out of Panj Pyare, and many Sikhs martyred But the Mughal army did not get the win over Palace.
In the Night-time remaining Sikhs request Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji to leave the Palace by saying that you as Guruji can create many Sikhs but we Sikhs will not be able to get a Guru like you. Guru Gobind Singh Ji left the Palace on the same night for the sake of his Sikhs. Before leaving the Palace, Guruji gave his Crest (Kalgi) to Bhai Sangat Singh Ji who was lookalike as them. Bhai Daya Singh Ji, Bhai Dharam Singh Ji, and Bhai Mann Singh Ji also go with Guruji.
When Guruji reached another side of the City, they clap 3 times while standing on the highest place to aware Mughal Army that Guru of Sikhs is going if you want to catch him then you can try to catch. Then Guruji leaves for the Forest of Machiware.
On the 9th Poh, remaining Sikhs martyred while fighting with Mughal Army.
